The only thing I could remember was something about a white stone as in the movie the boy and girl keep exchanging this stone as a game or token of love. I however have never been able to find it. I think it had a profound and positive effect on the rest of my life.

The Australian Broadcasting Commission, which showed the series on its multicultural network, then Channel 28, now SBS, may have archived the sub-titles.They do their own, and have translating services etc. I am sure children all over the world, and their parents, would be enriched by this wonderful work, and if it could be sub-titled, so much the better. The grace and serenity and compassion were absorbed by my daughter through languages other than verbal. So far superior to the raucous, aggressive, shallow, unimaginative and impoverished clichés generally offered to children. My daughter was entranced, even at the age of 5, as I read the subtitles to her. The scenery, the script, the acting, the soundtrack were all particularly fine. This exquisite series was shown in Australia, with English subtitles supplied by the national broadcaster, somewhere about 1982, entitled 'The White Stone'. They "fight" for a white stone and order each other on "missions": "when you have completed the "mission" you'll get the stone". The two children, who are alienated, start their own fraternity and call themselves "Fideli" (Fia) and "Farornas konung" ("King of the Dangers", Hampus). When Hampus and Fia meet, they don't want to say their real names.

The shoemaker's wife and her children think Hampus is stupid as he "always makes trouble and makes them move house" as they have changed home often. One summer day, a boy called Hampus comes to the village together with his stepparents, his uncle who is a poor shoemaker and his wife, and their 6 children.

Fia always gets teased by her school mates because she has a useless mother who is a piano teacher in their school. People say bad things about Mrs Pettersson because she is useless and lazy as she just plays piano. Fia and her mother Mrs Pettersson, a piano teacher, live in the big house of the village's "häradshövding" (a countryside local judge/lawspeaker), where the bad-tempered housekeeper Malin lives. The book takes place in a village in the Swedish countryside during the 1930s. In 1973, a TV version of the story was produced. In 1965, Linde received the Nils Holgersson Plaque for this book.

Watch and marvel what a good script (based on a children's book) that doesn't require today's special effect dependency, can do! How to paint a face on the town's church tower clock, for example!ĭen vita stenen ("The White Stone") is a 1964 Swedish children's book written by Gunnel Linde. There's not a false note or moment to be seen - with flawless acting and an equally touching piano music theme to match. But the ingenious story of the oath of the White Stone that the two swear, is timeless and nothing short of fantastic in its simplicity. Of course it's the loving friendship between Fideli and Hampus in 1930s Sweden that really matters as the whole theme of the show, including the Romeo & Juliet-style of difference in social class backgrounds. But I saw this twice as a kid in the 70-s, and I still rate this amazingly beautiful, sweet-natured and highly entertaining show as possibly Sweden's best ever in the genre (be it for "Ebba & Didrik")!

DO!Īs an adult, I might not be the one to judge among children's and youngster's TV shows. While in Assa and Black Rose he was referring to the present, he demonstrates in Tender Age his ability to use the same devices of film narrative to portray the past.If you EVER get a chance to see this series. In the style of Assa and Black Rose, Soloviev here again manages to portray an accurate, yet ironic picture of the young generation in the period of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Soloviev further parodies the events through the use of music and intertitles with high-browse quotes on everyday events. This device allows ironic distance on the part of the I-narrator Ivan to the events told in the ensuing retrospective of the film. Subsequently, he is forced to tell the story of his life to an army psychiatrist. The film explores the years of Ivan's adolescence through the prism of a trauma he incurred during an incident in the war when a parachute with a cartridge fell on his head. Review: Ivan Gromov (Dmitri Soloviev) is the grandson of a military fighter pilot.
